ADAM HUGHES
Adam Hughes is a studio potter based in Shrewsbury, North Shropshire, and a graduate of the prestigious Clay College Stoke-on-Trent. His work bridges the gap between everyday functional tableware and deeply textured, sculptural studio pottery.
Deeply inspired by the Shropshire countryside and abandoned sandstone quarries, Adam explores the aesthetic of nature reclaiming man-made structures. He expresses this narrative by blending wheel-thrown techniques with Kurinuki—the traditional Japanese art of carving vessels from solid blocks of clay. Working with local, high-iron clays and traditional Oribe and wood-ash glazes, he fires his work in both gas reduction and wood-fired kilns. The resulting stoneware pieces feature rich, organic surfaces that mirror the textures of earth, stone, and moss.
The artworks shown here are a selection of those featured at The Alchemist Gallery. We invite you to visit us in Sheffield to explore more of Adam’s work and experience the collection in person.
