ALEX WALSHAW
Alex Walshaw is a British artist and woodwright based in Lincolnshire, creating sculptures, furniture and functional objects from sustainably sourced, hand-carved wood. His practice is rooted in a deep connection with the natural landscape, approaching making as both a meditative process and a dialogue with the materials he uses.
Working exclusively with wind-fallen branches, reclaimed timber and coppiced green wood, Alex often combines freshly cut wood with ancient relic oak. Rejecting machinery in favour of traditional hand tools, including axes, knives and adzes, he embraces the natural character of each piece, preserving visible tool marks and using fire-scorching techniques to create distinctive textures and finishes.
Having trained under greenwood maker Hugh Roberts in the late 1990s, Alex has developed a distinctive practice informed by ecological principles and traditional craftsmanship. His work has been exhibited internationally and featured in leading contemporary craft galleries, including Maud & Mabel and Flow Gallery.
The artworks shown here represent a selection of those featured at The Alchemist Gallery. We invite you to visit us in Sheffield to discover more of Alex's work and experience the collection in person.
