ANDY POPLAR

Andy Poplar is a British glass artist and designer, best known for his distinctive Vinegar & Brown Paper collection, which combines traditional glass engraving with wit, wordplay and a fascination with everyday objects. His work transforms familiar and often overlooked pieces of glassware into thought-provoking contemporary artworks, inviting viewers to reconsider the relationship between an object's original purpose and its new identity.

A keen visitor to antique centres, second-hand shops and flea markets, Andy searches for vintage glass objects that offer interesting possibilities for reinvention. Using traditional hand-engraving techniques, he introduces carefully chosen words and phrases that play upon an object's shape, history or function. His clever use of language, humour and visual associations creates an unexpected dialogue between the object and the viewer, often revealing a second meaning that only becomes apparent on closer inspection.

Through Vinegar & Brown Paper, Andy celebrates the creative potential of reuse, giving discarded or forgotten objects a new lease of life. His work brings together craftsmanship, storytelling and an unmistakably playful approach to design, demonstrating how even the most ordinary materials can be transformed into something extraordinary.

The artworks shown here represent a selection of those featured at The Alchemist Gallery. We invite you to visit us in Sheffield to discover more of Andy's work and experience the collection in person.
