EFFIE BURNS

Effie Burns is a British glass artist whose distinctive sculptural work draws inspiration from the natural world, exploring the intricate forms, textures and structures found in plants, fungi and other organic materials. Her practice combines a fascination with natural history and an appreciation of the extraordinary beauty often hidden in the smallest details of nature.

Working primarily with kiln-cast glass, Effie transforms familiar natural forms into delicate, tactile sculptures that invite closer observation. Her work frequently explores seeds, pods, mushrooms and other botanical structures, capturing their intricate surfaces and organic shapes through the remarkable qualities of glass. The interplay of transparency, colour and light brings an unexpected sense of permanence to subjects that are often fragile or fleeting.

Having grown up surrounded by museum collections, Effie developed an early fascination with natural objects, scientific specimens and the relationship between art and the natural sciences. This curiosity continues to inform her practice, creating a distinctive dialogue between contemporary glassmaking, natural history and the traditions of collecting and display.

The artworks shown here represent a selection of those featured at The Alchemist Gallery. We invite you to visit us in Sheffield to discover more of Effie's work and experience the collection in person.
