NANCY MAIN

Nancy Main is a British ceramic artist based in Suffolk, creating elegant sculptural vessels that explore the relationship between human emotion, natural landscapes and the expressive qualities of clay. Her work is characterised by flowing, organic forms and softly textured surfaces, inviting contemplation and reflecting the beauty of imperfection, change and balance.

Working predominantly with wheel-thrown and altered porcelain, Nancy creates undulating forms that capture the subtle interplay of light and shadow. Her sculptures often possess a delicate, skin-like quality, with gentle variations in surface and shape suggesting the vulnerability and resilience of the human experience. Inspired by the shifting coastal landscapes of Suffolk, particularly the shingle formations of Shingle Street, her work draws parallels between the natural environment and the emotional landscapes of human life.

Nancy's ceramic practice spans more than twenty-five years, including time at the renowned Gaolyard Studios in St Ives, Cornwall. She returned to full-time making in 2021 and established Yoxford Makers, a pottery studio and teaching space in Suffolk. In 2023, she was selected as a member of Contemporary Applied Arts, recognising her contribution to contemporary British ceramics.
