TAYLOR SHAW

Taylor Shaw is a contemporary ceramic artist and potter based in Scarborough, North Yorkshire, whose work explores the relationship between ceramics, landscape and material culture. Combining functional pottery with sculptural experimentation, his practice celebrates the connection between the objects we use and the environments from which their materials originate.

Working primarily with wheel-thrown stoneware, Taylor incorporates locally gathered clay, naturally derived materials and traditional firing methods into his creative process. His ongoing research project, Making With Place, investigates how pottery can reconnect people with the landscapes they inhabit. Through geological exploration, wood firing and an appreciation of the unpredictable qualities of natural materials, he creates pieces that reflect the character and history of their origins.

Originally trained in fine art sculpture at Edinburgh College of Art, Taylor developed his interest in ceramics during 2020 before pursuing a master's degree in ceramics at the University for the Creative Arts. He is also the founder of The Scarborough Pottery, where his commitment to place, material and traditional craftsmanship continues to shape his practice.

The artworks shown here represent a selection of those featured at The Alchemist Gallery. We invite you to visit us in Sheffield to discover more of Taylor's work and experience the collection in person.
