TONI DE JESUS
Toni de Jesus is a contemporary ceramic artist whose expressive sculptural vessels explore identity, cultural heritage and the transformative possibilities of clay. Born in the UK and raised in Madeira, Portugal, his practice draws upon personal experience and a fascination with the expressive potential of ceramic form, creating objects that challenge conventional distinctions between vessel and sculpture.
His work combines an experimental approach to construction, surface and decoration, transforming familiar ceramic forms into highly individual sculptural statements. Often characterised by dramatic silhouettes, intricate details and an expressive sense of movement, his pieces explore the relationship between material, memory and identity. The resulting works invite viewers to reconsider the possibilities of ceramics as a medium for personal and artistic expression.
Toni studied at Cardiff School of Art and Design, graduating in 2018. His work has since featured in major contemporary ceramics exhibitions, including the British Ceramics Biennial and Collect Art Fair. In 2019, he received the Guldagergaard International Residency Award through the British Ceramics Biennial's FRESH exhibition, recognising his emerging contribution to contemporary ceramic practice.
The artworks shown here represent a selection of those featured at The Alchemist Gallery. We invite you to visit us in Sheffield to discover more of Toni's work and experience the collection in person.
