YUKI ARUGA

Yuki Aruga is a British-Japanese artist specialising in verre églomisé, the historic art of reverse painting and gilding on glass. Her intricate, luminous artworks combine traditional craftsmanship with a contemporary sensibility, drawing inspiration from the natural world, botanical forms and the delicate beauty of flowers.

Working on the reverse side of glass, Yuki builds her compositions through meticulous layers of painting, gilding and fine detailing. This demanding technique requires the artist to work in reverse, beginning with the finest details before gradually building the background. The addition of precious metal leaf creates extraordinary depth, luminosity and reflection, allowing her delicate botanical subjects to shift in appearance as the light changes.

Yuki's work reflects a fascination with the relationship between nature, light and material, bringing together the precision of traditional decorative arts and the expressive qualities of contemporary painting. Her distinctive approach celebrates the transformative possibilities of glass and gold, creating works that reward close observation and reveal new details with every viewing.

The artworks shown here represent a selection of those featured at The Alchemist Gallery. We invite you to visit us in Sheffield to discover more of Yuki's work and experience the collection in person.
